Premium Boxed Wine Thrives

From Shanken News Daily comes this industry update:

The premium three-liter boxed wine segment continues to enjoy strong momentum in the U.S., up 25% by value and 27% by volume in the 52 weeks through February 24, according to SymphonyIRI. The segment still appears to have plenty of upside, accounting for just 2% of the U.S. table wine market. It has consistently been led by Constellation’s Black Box, which last year reached nearly 2.7 million nine-liter cases on 29% growth, earning Impact “Hot Brand” status.

Black Box is reaching an iconic brand status for the fine wine box category. Constellation has been extremely consistent and constant in the brand packaging, keeping some of the key design concepts intact, such as foregoing any graphic imagery of bottles, glasses, or other forms of packaging, and maintaining the “label” as the focus of the design.

The key value proposition of high-end premium wine combined with the elegant packaging design, the everyday street price usually below $20 per 3-L box, and the high convenience of the form factor are driving sales and acceptance into core and casual wine drinker demographics.
